On  May 11, 2019, English Interpreting Contest of Hebei Province and the Eighth  National English Interpreting Qualification Contest was held in Hebei Normal  University. The competition was organized by the Entrepreneurship and Innovation  Center of the Translators' Association of China. 77 postgraduates and  undergraduates from 13 universities including Hebei Normal University, Hebei  University and Yanshan University took part in the competition. Zhao Ruolin, Li  Tianchang, Wang Xiao, Bai Runping and Yang Ruoxi, undergraduates of our college  in 2016, all performed well in the preliminary competition and entered the  semi-finals. After fierce competition, all of them won the third prize in the  semi-finals. This is the best result our students have achieved since our  students took part in this competition.

The  contest featured difficult questions and high level of students, most of whom  were master's degree students majoring in interpreting and undergraduate  students majoring in English translation, representing the highest level of  interpretation among students in our province. The contest is divided into two  parts: English-Chinese interpretation and Chinese-English interpretation. The  knockout contest in the morning is an English-Chinese translation with the  theme of "Mexican culture". Students are required to listen to an  English recording of 163 words for 1 minute and 20 seconds and take notes at  the same time. They are required to start interpreting in 2-4 seconds and the  translation time shall not exceed 1 minute and 59 seconds. In the afternoon,  the semi-final was to translate from Chinese to English with the theme of  "wormhole". The students are required to listen to a Chinese  recording of 200 words for 53s and interpret within 1 minute and 36 seconds. During  the competition, the students showed a good use of interpreting skills.

The  students of our university are all undergraduates majoring in general English,  and there is only one interpretation course (32 class hours) in the curriculum.  However, under the guidance of instructors Wang Dongwei and Yang Qing, the  contestants can translate between Chinese and English accurately and fluently  by using the methods of interpreting memory, interpreting notes and public  speaking skills. In the competition they have demonstrated the consecutive  interpretation skills and the ability, as well as certain practical ability.  Students said that by learning the interpreting course and participating in the  competition, they can better understand China's basic national conditions and  major lines, principles and policies, be familiar with the basic theory of  interpretation, master and better apply the interpreting skills and knowledge  of English and Chinese languages, so as to further improve the comprehensive language  application ability. The interpretation class pays attention not only to the  basic interpreting skills, but also to the improvement of practical ability, aiming  to enable students to interpret for general foreign guests in daily life, as  well as for general foreign affairs activities. Meanwhile, by grasping the interpreting  skills in foreign trade and business, the students will be able to work in this  area after graduation.

In  the future, the college will increase the investment and emphasis on the  interpretation courses, so as to lay a foundation for the students to engage in  the interpretation work and develop into interdisciplinary talents, meeting the  new requirements and challenges for foreign language talents in the new  century.
